As most of the Chinese/Japanese paintings and calligraphies are extremely sensitive to both physical and environmental changes, time transforms paintings in one way or another. Antique paintings often suffer damage and deterioration both through their natural aging process and from accidents, mishandling, improper storage and display, exposure to extreme or fluctuating temperatures and relative humidity, improper cleaning and substandard restorations. Basically paintings are often composed of incompatible materials, each having different reactions to changes in relative humidity,

temperature and light. Most paintings of any age have had some physical change or damage inflicted upon them; moreover, they all run the risk of being scratched, knocked, dented, torn or punctured.
Thanks to experienced and skilled Chinese/Japanese paintings and calligraphy restorer who is specialize in analyzing and assessing the condition of cultural property, understanding processes and evidence of deterioration, planning collections care or site management strategies that restore damage, carrying out restoration treatments, and conducting research in all of the areas involved for restoring the art items. Restoration of Chinese/Japanese paintings and calligraphy is an interdisciplinary field involving the knowledge of Chinese painting and calligraphy making, materials selections, mounting practices, skills for treatments of damage and deterioration on art items, and experience for repairs and restorations. All of those rely on guidance of chemical analysis on silk, paper, and pigments.

OMGM Is Developing Its European Old Master Market.

Determining the ages of silk and papers that are used for the Chinese and Japanese painting, will mostly figured out the ages of the paintings. However, western oil painting’s situation is different. There are cases that old aged paintings may lay on a newer canvas as the painting might be transferred from wood to canvas in recent centuries. In contrast, a newer painting might be painted on a piece of older wood. So the chemical lab analysis is even more important to determine an oil painting’s age.

Chemical and lab analysis are essential in two categories. One is to determine painting’s authenticity, the other is to determine the age. Chemical and lab analysis is also essential to create guidance to make pigments used to repair damaged parts of a painting. Western oil paintings and Eastern Asian paintings are using totally different kinds of chemical elements and producing process.

Beginning with tests and analyses to establish whether the age of the painting and the materials and techniques used are compatible with the presumed date of execution. The objective elements attesting to the authenticity of a work are to be found in a scientific laboratory! The museum laboratory’s mission is to improve existing scientific methods and elaborate new methods for the ascertainment of the authenticity of art objects. The laboratory’s instruments and know-how for the determining of authenticity are at the disposal of collectors, art experts, restorers, art galleries and museums. Further analyses performed in the spectroscopic chemical analyses on pigments, glues (paste), encrustations, patinas, products of corrosion.
